FTC SENDS CHECKS TO PEOPLE CHARGED ILLEGAL FEES FOR DEBT RELIEF
The FTC is sending refunds totaling more than $223,000 to people who were charged illegal upfront fees for debt relief and previously filed a report about it with law enforcement.
These refunds are the result of a lawsuit brought by the FTC against A1 DocPrep Inc. and related defendants. According to the FTC, the defendants collected illegal upfront fees after falsely promising to lower monthly student loan payments and forgive student loan debt, or promising distressed homeowners that they would negotiate mortgage modifications and prevent foreclosure.
The defendants operated using many different business names including:
- A1 DocPrep
- Project Uplift Students
- Home Shield Network
- Stream Lined Marketing
- Project Uplift America
- Keep Your Home USA
- Bloom Law Group PC
