I’m an investigator with the Bureau of Consumer Protection. I find it extremely satisfying to help consumers who have been cheated out of their money. I have worked on so-called “business opportunity” matters where people were conned into spending their life savings or their kids’ college funds to buy into an online business or vending route that never was intended to produce any income, and I just finished work on a case where consumers thought they had paid for full coverage health insurance—but discovered that they had bought a medical discount card instead. Many of these consumers had no idea that they had no health insurance until they were in the hospital trying to recover from serious illnesses and facing staggering hospital bills at the same time. The consumers I speak to in the course of my work are so thankful that the FTC is responding to their experiences and working hard to stop scams.
