I work at the FTC as an antitrust economist in the Bureau of Economics. The FTC is one of the best places to work as an economist. There are few other places where you can work with some of the best minds in Industrial Organization without the pressure to “publish or perish” and with managers who fully support a healthy work/life balance.
Many FTC economists conduct groundbreaking research and publish in top journals with extensive support (in time and data procurement) from management, but others advance their careers by focusing exclusively on casework. FTC economists get to chart their own paths and use their talents to best support the FTC’s mission of protecting competition. However, in my opinion, the best reason to work for the FTC is that you have the opportunity to improve the lives of consumers who otherwise might not have a voice.
