Subject: Making the Internet safe for Children

As the parent of 4, soon to be 5 children, I have an very intense interest and concern in what is available on the Internet. I can only compound this by saying that I also work and make my living working on the Internet. We, ( The USA Web Resource) have tried, in our own way to tackle this incredible challenge. We have created, and are expanding a national search engine which is category and geographically based and is 100% ADULT & VIOLENT SITE FREE.

As you can imagine, this is definitely a venture of love, not of financial gain. It has taken us 2 1/2 years to compile a listing of 25 states with the final 25 being completed by mid-summer of this year. Our site lists business's, schools, community groups, church's and government links. Our personal gratification is compounded when we see that of our user's, the K-12 school systems in the US are in our top 10 every month. These statistics continue to grow and we are encouraged that the educators in the country have acknowledged the usefulness of our site.

Furthermore, with events such as Littleton, Colorado; and the recent events in Atlanta, it is becoming ever more obvious that we need some type of structure within the system. Very few individuals such as ourselves and several ISP's, have taken on this challenge. The bottom line is that it is not as financially rewarding as the alternative.

I take heart in the fact that our viewership grows and with it, so grows the interest of the advertisers who finance ventures such as ours. In some part they advertise because they see the potential audience, but occasionally they advertise because they too are sick of the garbage that is available on the net and want to help use with our cause in whatever way they can.

The media pays a lot of attention to the bad side of the net, yet lets sites such as our flounder in a void because we up until now, have not been big news. Do to recent current events that is slowly changing but I feel that one of the few things that we can and should do is accentuate the positive. There are still a lot of good people in this country who have high moral values. We just have to let them know that there are some of them also on the Internet.

Sincerely,

Eric R. Herrmann
