The idea to change the liability for used vehicle purchases is absolutely ludacris. To make it legal for someone to sell a vehicle that they know has problems, and legally allow them to withhold this information from the buyer is a violation of our rights as consumers. I personally just purchased a used vehicle that needed over 1000 dollars in repairs the day after I purchased it. Even if there wasn't a risk factor to expect someone to have to spend as much or more in repairs on vehicle as they did to purchase it, immediately after having bought it, is entirely unreasonable. It was sold to me with multiple holes in the gas tank. My five year old son and myself were put in grave danger because we were not told of the problems with this vehicle. The mechanic I took it to after noticing the leak (which wasn't noticeable until after filling the tank) told me they were not legally allowed to even drive the vehicle to check for other problems due to liability issues because the entire undercarriage of my vehicle was soaked with gasoline. The FTC wants to make it legal for someone to sell a vehicle like that and not have to inform the buyer? I am a single mother, unemployed, and a full-time student I had to wait for my student loans to be able to purchase a vehicle after having my last one repossesed. Most people that are buying privately do not have the ability to go get a car loan and certainly don't have the resources to put thousands into a vehicle after having spent the money needed to purchase it in the first place. Again, regardless of the monetary consequences, the risks involved in allowing people to sell junk vehicles is inexcusable. It is not legal for a store to sell faulty merchandise there is no reason that someone selling a vehicle should be able to do this either. Changing this law could cause many deaths or injuries as people will be able to sell any vehicle with no concern for the person purchasing it whether monetary or for their physical well-being. This change should NOT happen and dealers and private sellers need to be held responsible for the products they sell.
