I am a veterinarian in a small, rural community. Our clinic stocks a wide variety of medications for both large and small animals. Many of our patients are acutely ill, and require prescriptions be filled very quickly to assure efficacy. If I need a human drug I do not stock, there are 3 pharmacies that service the same 70+ mile radius area that I practice in. Unfortunately, these human pharmacies are not open 24 hours a day, and emergency care necessitates acute drug use. Only a very few clients use an Internet pharmacy for preventative or chronic medications, these prescriptions are always evaluated and responded to with 24 hour turnaround. I have offered many clients a choice for filling their prescription, especially if said prescription is expensive. The vast majority of clients still obtain their medicine from us, because they TRUST US. We know what is best for their animal's particular condition, and are always available (we offer 24 hour service) to answer questions about drug reactions or lack of response. I believe as a whole, veterinarians are very knowledgeable about the pharmaceuticals used for their patients, and should continue to offer the same caring, dependable services and medications, without additional, burdensome paperwork. Many of my clients are on a fixed income, with no credit card. We work with them, offering credit and monthly payments. Online pharmacies do not. We may live in the 21st century, with its technological trappings, but many clients still prefer dealing face-to-face with the persons providing medical care for themselves and the creatures in their care. Do not REQUIRE us to write prescriptions - if my clients wish to travel 3 hours round-trip or wait 3 days for another pharmacy to fill their prescription, it is my pleasure to accede to their request, without a government agency telling me I must.
