HR 1406 is a redundant piece of proposed legislation. It will cause undue regulatory and administrative burdens on all veterinary practices. Written prescriptions are already available, if requested, as per our state regulations. We prefer our clients take medications with them, to make certain the instructions are understood and followed. The provision requiring verificationof prescriptions, regardless of whether the pharmacy is accredited or licensed, places veterinarians in both a legal and ethical delemma. Furthermore it puts consumers a considerable risk. Veterinarians are trained to prescribe and treat their patients. This includes educating the owner on proper use of medications and timely manner in giving medications. If prescriptions are not filled immediately, or not used properly then the patient suffers. I believe HR 1406 is unnecessary and detrimental to the vetrinary profession and their patients.
