I have been in practice for over 27 years, and routinely prescribe medications. Many are inexpensively and readily available in our in-house pharmacy, but others can be purchased more cost-effectively elsewhere, especially when the urgency to treat is not an issue. We regularly advise our clients when this possibility exists. I am, however, very concerned about a federal law that would mandate my taking valuable time from the office visit to provide an infomercial for the large chain stores that have recently ventured into the veterinary pharmacy business. It is obvious to all that this law is being proposed to induce uncompensated advertising for these retailers, and not, as they would say, because they have the best interests of the clients in mind. In addition to the resentment I would feel every time I changed the exam room conversation from the focus of the pet's problem, diagnosis, treatment, management, prognosis, diet, etc. etc.- a long list of essentials that I need to cover with each visit- to how the owners could visit large retail chains and possibly get better prices, I would have to extend my office visits and consequently charge more to owners, a consequence that most veterinarians would adopt as well, with the net effect of harming the public and our profession, which is already perceived as charging too much. Let the large retailers do their own marketing, at their expense, and please do not pass any redundant regulations that would only serve as hardships on veterinarians.
