Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

I am a practicing veterinarian with 12 years clinical experience. I routinely ask owners if they want their prescriptions filled at a pharmacy. Mandating a written prescription for everything, INCLUDING MEDICATIONS THAT ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT A HUMAN PHARMACY, is a burden on my time and ability to practice efficiently. As an alternative, why not mandate that veterinarians must OFFER to script to a human pharmacy, rather than MUST SCRIPT period Additionally, please be aware that since human pharmacists are untrained in veterinary medicine, they cannot properly advise clients on medications. If the pet dies because of a human pharmacist error, the pharmacist is not currently held responsible. It becomes the VET's liability - this is a big reason why we are not comfortable scripting everything to human pharmacies! I will take full responsibility for my actions, but I REFUSE to take responsibility for someone else's actions, especially when they are untrained and uneducated. Forget the cost part - please consider this from an animal safety perspective. The person with the most education and knowledge about animal drugs SHOULD BE the one doing the dispensing. Thank you for your time.
