I am vehemently opposed to the a blanket pet portability proposal. I have been practicing veterinary medicine for 16 years and have seen many errors throughout my career when pet medications are filled at human pharmacies. Medications are filled erroneously, a different strength or formulation prescribed, animal prescriptions filled for humans, veterinarians licenses used indiscriminantly by non-veterinarians, animals getting seriously ill, pharmacy personell refilling prescriptions without verifying authenticity, and human pharmacists giving erroneus veterinary advice to pet owners. My question is this: If human pharmacies and conglomerates are allowed to fill pet prescription medications, will the same hold true-- veterinary pharmacies filling human medications Will Wal Mart back their products if an animal becomes heartworm positive We are travelling down a slippery slope. I am pleading to the FTC to use common sense and have the animals medical well being and safety in mind.
