Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

Pet Medications Workshop, Project No. P12-1201 H.R. 1406 is unnecessary and puts consumers at risk as they may be having their prescriptions filled inaccurately by an off-site pharmacy. Pharmacists are not trained to provide education to pet owners. Dogs, cats, horses and other species do not have the same reactions to medication as humans and therefore veterinarians are the best group to provide medications and information on the medications that they are prescribing. Pet owners prefer to obtain their pet's medication in the veterinary hospital as it is most convenient for them to do so. A written prescription is always provided when requested. If a written prescription was required for each and every medication regardless of whether or not the prescription was being filled at the veterinary hospital this would cause an undue administrative burden on veterinary practices and waste the time of the pet owners.
