Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

As a veterinarian and practice owner, I am constantly tasked with balancing what is best for my patients, affordable for their owners, and profitable for my business. Prescription medications are responsible for approximately 23% of the annual pet medical expenses for my clients. We keep or prescription markup comparible to local and Internet pharmacies and in most cases, are cheaper than our competitors. If clients wish to fill their prescriptions elsewhere we gladly call in or write a prescription. In Missouri we are required by law to do so. I find it quite interesting that with the big retailers recent interest in pet pharmacies that both the legislature and FTC are considering action to burden veterinarians with yet more regulations that, in the end, cost us and our pet owners more money. The end result of veterinarians losing pharmaceuticals as a profit center is that we will be forced to increase our fees for services while consumers will still pay the same or more for medications at the big retail pharmacies, thus, overall expense to the pet owning consumer will increase.
