Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

Being that I founded a rescue that provides low cost services to the community, I am well aware of the financial hurdles people are trying to jump in order to care for their pets. That being said, veterinarians are the ones who have the knowledge necessary to guide pet owners in making the best and safest choices for the animals. The workers at Walmart are not equipt to tell people that the active ingredient in Hartz flea spray is an organophosphate that inhibits acetylcholinesterase, just like sarin nerve gas, and can cause a dog or cat to die if it is used inappropriately. Is it cheaper than Frontline spray - absolutely. Is it in a pet or owner's best interest - most definitely not. Frontline's active ingredient only affects insects because it binds to receptors that are different in fleas than in us mammals. Although I would not explain it to a client in such detail, my knowledge can guide them in choosing a safe and effective product. This is already happening and animals are dying as a result of companies choosing saving a buck over product safety. It would only worsen if you take away the ability of veterinarians to guide pet owners in making the best choices for their pets.
