I have no issues with writing prescriptions for clients. I will sometimes recommend it because it may be significantly cheaper than I can offer. Some of us have stopped carrying certain antibiotics because the the Big Box companies can offer them for just dollars. We will get to a point in the next 10 years where veterinarians will no longer carry medications/stock thier pharmacy. This is inevitiable. And I would be completely comfortable with my local pharamcies taking on this role (whether private or big box). They will just have to start stocking vet only products as well. However, I am very hesitant to have online pharmacies take this role on. There does not seem to be enough regulation and the penalties are not very severe. We have all heard about conterfiet products being sold, medications filled without a signed prescription (or active doctor-patient relationship) and products sold written in another language (on the packaging). What accountability is there If I can not guarantee that my patients are getting safe products, then we should be able to control where they get their presciptions filled. What training do human pharmacists have in veterinary medicine I think that pharmacy schools should start instructing in vet med since this is the direction that we are headed.
