Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

I am opposed to HR 1406 for many reasons. Human pharmacists are not educated in veterinary pharmacology and there are many differences between the ways humans and animals metabolize drugs. Drug dosages for veterinary patients are often different than human dosages. Certain drugs are safe in humans and not in animals. Certain drugs are safe in dogs but not safe in cats, and there are many species variations of drug safety. This bill would put an undue burden on pharmacists and veterinarians alike. I foresee many confused calls from pharmacists because of unexpectedly high or low dosages on prescriptions written for pets. Also I foresee many adverse drug reactions because of uncaught inappropriate drug combinations or dosages (due lack of education in veterinary pharmacology) that pharmacists usually catch on human prescriptions (because of their extensive training in human pharmacology).
