Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

Veterinarians already offer written prescriptions for many medications and if asked will not refuse. It should be left to the individuals involved in each situation to decide whether a written prescription is preferable - we do not need legislation. There are times when a client is encouraged to fill a prescription at the clinic because we know that we have that particular medication in stock and in the correct formulation/concentration knowing that the patient's medical condition creates an urgency. There are times when the clients themselves, choose to have the medication filled at the veterinary clinic because they appreciate the convenience and assurance which that provides. If significant savings can be made by having a prescription filled at a different pharmacy it is in everyone's interests to do that - the client saves money on medication and more funds are available to spend - if needed - on further services or diagnostics. The veterinarian and the client are already on the same side - we do not need legislation to dictate our actions and potentially create new problems.
