I am a small animal veterinarian and I write prescriptions for people all the time for their pets but there have been numerous errors with this - one actually occured with my own dog and had I not been a veterinarian I would not have caught the error and I would have given my dog a fertility drug rather than an antianxiety drug! Pharmacies make mistakes all the time and do not take it seriously because it is a pet rather than a person. Human pharmacies also do not understand that drug dosages are not the same in all cases as human dosages. I have seen online pharmacies fill prescription drugs without the approval of a veterinarian and in some cases have dispenses things that would be contraindicated. You are also asking us to fax info to unknown places which then have our signatures, DEA numbers, etc and who knows what will be dispensed to whom. Animal medications need to remain under the control of the veterinarian. For the most part this is an honest profession and we are not trying to cheat people out of their money, we are trying to do our best to do what is right for the pet according to the oath we took when we graduated from veterinary school.
