My practice dispenses medications as well as provides prescriptions for medications. The choice to send prescriptions elsewhere is made by the patient and Doctor working together. When filling scripts at the office, we have access to the EXACT wording that is printed on the label to ensure the patient is giving the medication correctly. We go over the medications as we hand it to the client. Sending meds to an outside pharmacy removes these safety measures, so extra time is spent explaining things to the client and verifying correct usage. We have seen numerous errors in outside prescriptions, putting the patients at risk. Human pharmacists are NOT trained to discuss animal medications, their effects, side effects and interactions. I believe firmly this is a farce of a bill promoting fairness to the consumer. It is clearly an attempt by the big box chains to cash in on a market they have not previously tapped into. We charge consumers a fair price and believe the Doctor:Patient relationship is best served by NOT adding additional restriction and requirements to each visit. Adding additional time requirements will only add to the cost of providing care, having the complete opposite effect of the proposed purpose of the bill. It will however add to the bottom line of the big box stores who are behind this bill.
