Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

As a veterinarian I am more than happy to write a prescription to commonly available drugs for my clients. Being required to do so is unnecessary and burdensome. I do fully warn my clients that I have seen multiple mistakes with online pharmacies. Indeed human pharmacists also have questioned the dosages used as they are very different for dogs and cats than for humans. I have even had several pharmacists change the medication for a drug they feel is equivalent without checking. Once this was for a drug that was NOT to be used in animals. Human pharmacists are not trained in dogs and cats, they have no knowledge of riks, drug interactions, side effects and dosages. It is dangerous to assume that they will provide the same service as a veterinary in hospital pharmacy that provides the owner with a pet friendly product, information on side effects and support for possible problems.
