Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

I am opposed to requiring veterinarians to write prescriptions for every medication prescribed. My clients already know they have options regarding where they get prescriptions filled, and I already write prescriptions for clients who want them. If a client prefers to purchase a medication from the animal hospital where I practice, there is no point in also giving them a written presciption. Giving them a medication and a prescription means they can give the medicine we give them and also fill the prescription and continue the medication for twice as long as we originally intended. This could be harmful or delay rechecks and further treatments that are needed. Writing un-needed prescriptions will also be more time consuming for me and the rest of the staff as these will need to be written out, checked, and scanned into the charts. It's already hard enough to stay on schedule with appointments without adding more steps.
