Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

We are already required to write a prescription if our client wishes to get their pet's medication elsewhere. To require us to write prescriptions for medications we are filling in house is redundant, as it is reflected in the pet's medical record when we print a label and charge the client for it. It would also be time-consuming in a profession where time is at a premium on most days and wasteful of resources (i.e., not green!). If we have to print written prescriptions for everything that goes out the door with the pet, our cost for office supplies will go up and there will be a lot of extra paper getting thrown out! Also, if owner's opt to get a prescription item from an online pharmacy instead of their veterinarian, I believe the veterinarian should be exempt from any liability should that product cause a problem for the pet because of sub-par quality of the product. Once they go to that online source, it is out of our hands. If we have no control, we should have no liability.
