Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

As a pet owner, my first concern is that pet medications be SAFE! Let's do what it takes to make sure they are not laced with the same poisonous ingredients that constantly seem to find their way from China into pet foods!!! If that means restricting ingredients or finished products from certain sources, so be it. Secondly, the goal should be to keep pet meds at a reasonable cost. Otherwise, the cost of food and medical care and medications will make it prohibitive for people to have animal companions. Thirdly, let's prescribe intelligently for the particular situation. In my cat's clearly dying days, she was prescribed an anti vomiting medicine given to human cancer patients. The Vet wrote out the prescription, handed it to me and off I went to the drug store with no warning as to the likely ridiculous cost. I paid the price because I could and because I loved my animal. She was dead in less than 24 hours, made sicker I believe by the medicine. Let's remember that the purpose of drugs and medical care is to ease the animal's suffering and bring them to some reasonable degree of well being. Just because a medication is available, doesn't mean that it makes sense to prescribe it.
