Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

Pet Meications Workshop, Project No. P12-1201 Regarding the Fairness to Pet Owners Act. I oppose the Fairness to Pet Owners Act because it is not in the best interests of animals, animal owners, veterinarians or pharmacists, and it is not necessary in Indiana because of current legislation. Many prescription drugs commonly used in veterinary medicine are not available at pharmacies, or not available in the form or strength used for animals. Drug uses, indications, phamacology, pharmacokinetics, contraindiacations, adverse effects, toxicity, and drug interactions are unique for each species. Phamacists are well educated in these areas for humans, but not for animals. Veterinarians are in a much better position to ensure the safe use of drugs in animals. In Indiana and in many other states veterinarians are required by law to provide prescriptions when requested. Veterinarians already provide prescriptions. Often veterinarians instruct owners get their prescription drugs from pharmacies if they are less expensive there. Requiring veterinarians to write prescriptions in all cases, even when not reqested by animal owners, would be time consuming and burdensome for veterinarains and will drive up the cost of drugs for animal owners.
