Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

As a veterinarian and a business owner I ask you to consider a balance for both businesses and the consumer in regards to the Fairness to Pet Owners Act(HR1406). If a consumer asks for a written prescription for an eligible medication I am willing to write that prescription. Forcing veterinarians to write a prescription for every client is wrong, and a waste of resources. There are abuses of prescriptions, including controlled drugs. We will have no control over all the written prescriptions that will be out there if we have to write one for every client. Many veterinarians count on pharmacy sales to help buoy their practices, whether it is parasite preventatives or treatments for illness. Internet pharmacies are out to make money and cannot guarantee their products, as they do not obtain them directly from a manufacturer as veterinarians do. Many veterinarians can come close to the bulk prices offered over the internet, and if we are restrained in our efforts sell prescriptions our businesses will be hurt and the pets we protect will suffer. We sell medications to help animals, not just make money. Please consider that veterinarians are in business to provide safe, effective drugs for the consumers' pets. Should more regulations be put in place to hurt our livelihood we will not be able to help those pets. Then everyone will suffer. Thanks for your time. Dr. Karen Buchinger
