Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

To whom it may concern, I practice full-time as an emergency veterinarian. I strive to provide the best possible care that I can to my veterinary patients. I am concerned about the possiblity of legally having to write a prescritiption for every medication that I may want to use to treat my patient's to the best of my ability. First, writing prescriptions would take time. This time would be better spent talking to clients and attending to patient's needs. Secondly, many of my patient's require help in the middle of the night, weekends, or holidays. Times that there may not be many pharmacies open. Therefore, out of convience clients often have prescriptions filled in office. Lastly, often I hospitalize patients to continue more intesive care and monitoring that cannot be done on an outpatient basis. These critical patients frequently require multiple medications that they may not need to be sent home with. Having to write a prescription for every single medication is not effective use of resources or time. Thank you for your help in this matter, Jennifer Stresemann, DVM Associate Veterinarian Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital
