Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

I have been a veterinarian since 1984. The profession has changed greatly over that time and access to pharmaceuticals is probably the greatest degree of change. While this has been a great boon to reputable consumers and pharmacies, it has also resulted in scrupulous pharmacies ignoring pharmacy rules and distributing medications without a prescription being offered. There seems to be insufficient oversight over this industry allowing this corruption. That said, I think the consumer has the right to access to internet based medications as long as this supervision is sufficient. I also do not object to companies selling product to these pharmacies as long as regulation and consequences are significant. What I cannot support is mandating to veterinarians that we have to offer prescriptions for every client and every medication recommended. This is intrusive into our rights and functions to dictate how we practice. It is up to the individual veterinarian to decide how to practice, including how to dispense. The client has the right and ability to request a prescription. We are already mandated to provide this prescription and this is right and just. But we should not be mandated to offer this to every client in every instance. This should be left to the client.
