Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

My biggest concern with PetMeds is their false advertising. Their commercials state that the medication they have is cheaper that at a veterinarians office. This is most certainly not true for many products as many veterinarians do price shop and stay competitive. My biggest concern with dispensing pet medications in big box store pharmacies is that the pharmacists are not getting any pet specific training. Thus most have very little knowledge about the products they are dispensing. If there is more training and the pharmacist better understand pet medications then I do not have as much of a concern. As far as written prescriptions, if any client asks for one I will gladly give them one. A law to require me to write a prescription is absurd as there are limited (if any) brick and mortar pharmacies other than a veterinary clinic that offer many of the pet only prescriptions that we have. If there were more pharmacies that offered a wide variety of medications then it may be more reasonable. But currently it seems to be more of a hoop to jump through than an advantage to the clients. I realize this is a multi-billion dollar industry but I want to make sure that the pet does not get lost in this money war
