Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

H.R.1406,The Fairness to Pet Owners Act is over reaching, onerous and and redundant. Veterinarians already script out medications when appropriate for many reasons. Creating this Federal law is burdensome to Veterinarians and unnecesary. This law is being brought about by large pharmacies in pursuit of increasing profits and would adversely affect the SMALL BUSINESSES. Veterinarians are uniquely trained and educated in comparative medicine. They are aware of the differing physiology and metabolism of birds, reptiles and mammels along with the unique differences in drug handling often with-in individual species and amongst differing breeds . Human pharmacist plainly are not. Also this Bill isn't clear to me if it is only for dogs and cats or for all pets. Be it a pony or small or large exotic pet species. For example, some States permit large feline carnivores to be owned as pets. If it pertains to limited species then obviously prejudicial. Then I also have to ask the question, Why just pets Why not farm animal medicine Do they not get medicines Why focus on the pet side of veterinary medicine Again, the supporters of this thinly disguised Bill really have their own interests in mind. Veterinarians are ethically bound to do what they feel is right for their patients. The Federal Government does not need to step in with an onderous, detrimental piece of legislature.
