Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

Where to begin The problem with human pharmacists dispensing veterinary medications is insurmountable. You can't have a person trained in the dosing, affects, and interactions of human medicines distributing medications meant for animals. That is the equivalent of going to a veterinarian to cure a rash on your back, or a pet store for a cure to the common cold. There shouldn't be any medicine dispensed without a trained veterinary technician on staff. Just as no medication should be released from a pharmacy without a trained pharmacologist on staff. So many mistakes can be made in human medicine alone. There is no need to add to that by having someone untrained dispensing medication to animals. The consequences could be disastrous, for not only the pet who could possibly be affected if say the wrong dosage were dispensed or if two medications that don't interact well are given simultaneously, but for the pet owner who would have to deal with the consequences of these drugs. I wouldn't take my pet anywhere other than a veterinarian for all of their medical needs. It just isn't practical or logical to get your medicine dispensed by your local pharmacy. Another good point is when you go to a veterinarian, your medications are given in hand. Where as if you were to just receive a prescription it is something that easily has the potential to be misplaced, lost, or even forgotten for that matter. We need to make it easier for pets to receive their medications. Obtaining your medicine from a pharmacy seems like you're going through twice the hassle for the same end result. I have been in the veterinary field for 10+ years and i can safely say, without a shadow of a doubt that it is wrong to go anywhere but a veterinarian for your pets needs.
