I am pleased that the FTC is looking into the distrubution and market pressures affecting the pet pharacutical market. I, like most veterinarian feel that the current situation is unsafe for pets, misleading to pet owners and oppressive for veterinarians. Although I ensure that medications purchased through me either at my office or directly from my suppliers are the "genuine article" and are prescribed as appropriate for animals. There is absolutely no guarantees, chain of medication pedigree or availablilty of sound and trained advice for pets or pet owners outside of their veterinarian's office. The amount of time that I spend educating every owner who is provided with a written prescription to obtain medications from outside sources is not recoverable in the current economic situation that veterinaians are in. Veterinary pharmacy income is part of how veterinarians spread out the costs to the pet owners so they can continue to seek professional care for their pets.
