Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

There are 3 veterinary clinics in my area. There are 6 pharmacies. The pharmacies have shown no interest in carrying veterinary labeled drugs other than Wal-Mart which will carry heartworm preventative. this is due to the fact that there are hundreds of veterinary labeled prescriptions on the market. It would be nice to only have to write a prescription and move on to the next patient. Having to stock a pharmacy is one of the reasons veterinarians do not make the income of other health-care professionals. From what I understand about this new FTC plan, I would write a prescription and hand it to the owner. The owner would then have to had me back the prescription so we could fill it. I would be happy to write prescriptions if the pharmacies carried the medication, but they will not. However, if you make me write a prescription, then turn around and I have to be the one to fill it because the pharmacies won't carry the medication, that will increase my cost to provide that prescription. Guess who pays for the increased cost
