Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201

My most pressing concern is the lack of training in animal pharmacology at human pharmacies. Yes, due to their buying power and volume, they can offer medications and products at a discounted price, but can they offer the personalized service we provide I can t count the number of times a human pharmacy has incorrectly filled a prescription for one of my patients. We even had a pharmacist recommend chocolate syrup to aid in the ease of administering a medication! My second concern is that it will lead to fee increases for all other veterinary services which will then lead to higher overall costs to clients. If I lose the revenue that currently comes from my in-house pharmacy, I will have to raise other fees to compensate. Therefore, the clients invoice will remain basically the same but they will have the additional cost of filling their prescriptions at an outside pharmacy. My third concern is one of convenience and compliance. If I have a patient with an ulcerated eye in the middle of summer, how convenient will it be for my client to take the pet home, drive to a pharmacy, wait for the prescription to be filled, and then drive home to begin treatment Attached please find a small poster that I have in my practice that is aimed at asking my clients to consider more that just the dollar amount.
