Both Tennessee and Georgia already require veterinarians to write prescriptions when asked. Many other states do also. The federal government should not be involved in a state issue. The Fairness to Pet Owner's Act (which prompted this inquiry by the FTC) is not about fostering competition, it is about WalMart and 1800PetMeds.com using the federal government to give them an edge rather than competing on their own merits. The Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act is poor model for the regulation of pet prescriptions, it is clearly designed to benefit huge corporations at the expense of the their smaller competitors. Advocates claim that government regulation "levels the playing field." It does not, instead it helps to eradicate the competition posed by smaller businesses.
