I do not feel the fairness to Pet owners act is necessary and in fact will endanger many pets' lives. As a practicing veterinarian, pet owners currently have the ability to receive a prescription from me if they wish. I provide invaluable information to the pet owner that they will not receive from human pharmacists because of the special needs and differences seen in other species than humans. Animals can not tell owners when something is not right but a discussion with a pet owner and trained veterinarian will often find problems that can be addressed before more severe consequences occur. The more you remove veterinarians from the care of pets, the more problems you see with drug reactions. This is well documented in the OTC market for parasiticals. The inability of pets to verbalize when they are having a reaction makes the situation unique and unlike the contact lens industry. This would be a law that will hurt rather than help animal health. The law will also place an unfair administrative burden on practices when current policy allows clients to receive a prescription.
