Good afternoon, I am writing to voice my support for a Trader Joe's store to open in the former Wild Oats space on Marginal Way in Portland, Maine. Portland has a large community of health-conscious and vegetarian consumers. This community was primarily served by a locally-owned store called The Whole Grocer. Wild Oats opened, creating competition and giving greater choice. When Whole Foods came to Portland, they purchased The Whole Grocer and closed the location. Shortly thereafter, Whole Foods purchased the Wild Oats chain and closed the Portland store. This has left the city with only one option for a natural grocery store. Whole Foods, having no competition other than small sections of the regular supermarket chains, has extremely high prices and has a monopoly on many products in the area. Opening a Trader Joe's in the city will provide the community with greater choice and price competition that is currently lacking. I've never shopped at a Trader Joe's store, but have heard many great reports about their products, prices, and the way that they conduct business and treat their employees. The additional jobs would also be a great boon to our area in this time of economic instability and high unemployment. Thank you, Cynthia Grimm
