Bringing Trader Joe's to Portland is an excellent idea. It will create some competition for the very high-priced Whole Foods store. And there is a clientele that has been waiting for a TJ store for years. I regularly travel to Peabody, MA to shop at TJ, as do many of my friends. Having a store in Portland will actually be good for the environment since it will cut down on car trips to the Boston area! But mostly, it will be a good way to keep Whole Foods on its toes and responsive to the Portland community. Though they have very good food and are good citizens, there is no real competition for them in the organic foods market. First Wild Oats knocked the Whole Grocer out of business, then just as we got used to Wild Oats, Whole Foods knocked them out. Since then, they have had a virtual monopoly. Hannaford's has an organic section, but nothing like the variety, quality and pricing that Trader Joe would provide to our community. Thanks and I really hope this plan can go through. Kali Lightfoot
