Proposed Consent Agreement In the Matter of the Indoor Tanning Association, FTC File No. 082 3159

I am a melanoma surgical oncologist and there is no question in my mind that the incidence of melanoma has increased tremendously over the last 20 years and parallels the increased use of tanning beds, especially in the young female population in our region. I routinely see young women from age 15-25 years of age with melanoma, some of whom have died and almost all of them have frequented tanning salons. I see 10-15 new melanoma patients every week in my practice and take a tanning history from every patient. More than 90% report having frequent visits to tanning salons. There is a large population study that was done in Scandinavia where the incidence of melanoma was shown to be 50% higher in women who tanned frequently compared to those who did not. I believe from a medical perspective that the tanning industry should be regulated to decrease its use at any age but especially in our young people who are most vulnerable to this disease when exposed to excessive UV exposure.....Kindest regards, R D Noyes MD
