Last January I requested a free credit report for my husband and me. Today (11/30/09) we discovered two charges for $14.95 each that we have been receiving on our VISA since June (one for my husband, one for me, I gather). I was completely unaware, and according to both Experian and FreeCreditReport.com, there was something in the fine print on the website that indicated our automatic enrollment in a program that would be free for 6 months, after which we would be charged if we did not cancel. I had received emails, but since I didn't know where they came from I deleted them. When I phoned both organizations they refused to reimburse me. I do not consider this "free"--it has now cost us close to $180. It is deceptive and designed to take advantage of the consumer. These companies should not only be required to prominently identify "offers", they should be required to obtain agreement from the customer before any kind of charge can be made. I'd think it would be in the best interests of the companies themselves to get an agreement in writing from a consumer that indicates their understanding of the terms of any program. So, I am fully in support of any proposal that cracks down on these practices, and would appreciate it if instructions on how to get a refund were to be published. Thank you.
