In my opinion, one of the easiest ways to ensure that the legitimate free credit report site is easy to differentiate from scams and imitators is to host it using a .gov domain name, such as http://www.AnnualCreditReport.gov/. Issuance of a .gov domain is not attainable for most companies and common scam artists, unlike a .com domain name, with anyone with $10 can purchase. Using the .gov domain gives a clear indication to the user that they are in fact using the real government-run service.
