16 CFR Part 610 Amendments to Rule to Prevent Deceptive Marketing of Credit Reports and to Ensure Access to Free Annual File Disclosures

As the FTC considers revamping the rules for providers of free credit reports, positive steps must be taken to end the deceptive advertising executed on the websites of the providers of these reports. A simple, straight-forward internet process to receive the free credit report is needed. Under the current process, the multiple steps required to navigate through to receive the free credit report include several opportunities to become derailed - by direct marketing pop-ups, hot-links, deceptive terminology and the like - from what should be a simple process. At the end of receiving the free credit report, there can be an option to continue on to additional products/services offered by the credit report agencies. The current web-based process is intentionally deceiving and represents a significant departure from what was intended to be a simple, easy process. -paul schlise
