16 CFR Part 610 Amendments to Rule to Prevent Deceptive Marketing of Credit Reports and to Ensure Access to Free Annual File Disclosures

The right of the consumer to inspect his file should not be limited to one free check a year. With the rise of identity theft and other types of electronic thefts, encouraging consumers to be more diligent about checking the consistency of their credit history would be far cheaper than the costs associated with fraud and whatever business incentives these credit agencies have to try and sell you plans to view your credit scores. Credit scores are information based upon data of an individual, yet this information about the individual is not free. Credit scores should be made available free to individuals at least once a year. The advertising and selling hurdles you have to go through to get to the free credit report site are a barrier to entry to get people to use the site. Make the consumer site free, both in cost and advertising / upsell barriers.
