16 CFR Part 610 Amendments to Rule to Prevent Deceptive Marketing of Credit Reports and to Ensure Access to Free Annual File Disclosures

I recently applied for my credit report about 3 months ago and after waiting about a month I received a letter from: Equifax Information Services LLC, P.O. Box 105069, Atlanta GA 30348-5069. It stated in order to protect the confidentiality of my file that I had to verify my identification and address with a copy of one of the following: ID - Social Security Card or Pay stub with SSN or W2 form. Address - Drivers License or Rental lease agreement/house deed or Pay stub with address or Utility bill. I chose to send a copy of my gas bill with my home address on it and a copy of my Social Security Card with the word "COPY" written across it. I mailed it off and waited about another month and a letter from the same address arrived with the same requests being made but this time the letter stated "At this time ther is a charge for the Equifax credit file and/or score. The charge for a disclosure is $8.00. Additional reports within 12 months are $8.00. The charge for the credit score is $7.95. If you have a major credit card, you may use our automated ordering system at 1-800-685-1111." WHAT HAPPENED TO MY ANNUAL 'FREE' CREDIT REPORT? I never did reply to this last letter and am informing you what my experience was when I did try to obtain my credit report through annualcreditreport.com which turned out to be nothing but a scam.
