16 CFR Part 610 Amendments to Rule to Prevent Deceptive Marketing of Credit Reports and to Ensure Access to Free Annual File Disclosures

January 2009-I signed up for my free credit report from freecreditreport.com and was mislead and taken advantage of. The commercials and website advertise very clearly that you will receive a free report once you sign up on-line. I realized after 5 months of being charged $14.95 that this was not actually a free report. In fine print at the bottom of the website page after you are forced to provide credit card details, the statement says you will be charged $14.95 per month if you don't cancel your membership in 9 days. I think this unfair way to do business and is very misleading, I was charged. $75 without my knowledge for a service I didn't receive. PAYMENT INFORMATION "When you order your free report here, you will begin your free trial membership in Triple AdvantageSM Credit Monitoring. If you don't cancel your membership within 9 days of enrollment, you will be billed $14.95 for each month that you continue your membership. If you are not satisfied, you can cancel at any time to discontinue the membership and stop the monthly billing however, you will, not be eligible for a pro-rated refund of your current months paid membership fee." In addition, the charge on AMEX statement was for a generic charge that is very discreet, I think this also very misleading, most people wouldn't catch this on their statement. In the end, I contacted American Express who luckily credited my card $59.80 for four of the five months. I also contacted the Better Business Bureau who credited the additional amount I was paid. I hope this dishonest way of doing business is put to a stop. I feel like I am somewhat savvy consumer but I was totally mislead. I think the average American who is trying to the right thing will be taken like I was. I am looking forward significant consequences and penalties for "Free"creditreport.com. Complaint Summary
