16 CFR Part 610 Amendments to Rule to Prevent Deceptive Marketing of Credit Reports and to Ensure Access to Free Annual File Disclosures

I recently went online to obtain a "free" credit report from one of the big three credit reporting agencies. The experience was one of total frustration and paranoia, start to finish. It was painfully obvious that there was no honest attempt to make the report readily available for free. At every turn there were confusing links, questions, and other chaff tossed in my way, all designed to confuse and confound a consumer who simply wanted what was promised: an honest-to-goodness free credit report. Instead, I became so fearful of getting roped into paying inadvertently that I gave up. These agencies should be ashamed of this kind of treatment of the American public. What they pretend to offer is a total sham. They have no intention of giving the American public anything for free. They every intention of tricking us into paying for a report. It's time for the US government (FTC) to call their bluff and make them provide these reports in a truly straightforward manner. It's the law, isn't it? Let's put an end this kind of perfidy once and for all. PLEASE!
