From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
The whole premise is faulty. Journalism will continue to thrive just as travel has survived since the invention of the car and airplane without the horse and buggy. Journalism will evolve over time but will continue because people will continue to desire news and journalism in general. There is not a need to "better support and lower the costs" because the market continues to have the need and will continue to support it though it will evolve naturally through market forces and the cost will be lower. Imposing taxes and subsidies to inefficient news services will prevent them from evolving and excelling and instead will increase costs and encourage the status quo. As technology evolves there will be those who want to continue supporting costly and inefficient services just as though who wanted to continue with the horse and buggy because it would put tons of people out of work.
