From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
We, the American public, are not in need of federal monies or regulations to "reinvent journalism", as has been proposed. I have read the paper and seen within the insidious long arm of the government, that would seek to manipulate media. This has all the makings of very dangerous liasons, that threaten to stifle independence and the free market. News media will rise or fall based upon it's own merits and the value the public derives from it. It need not be propped up, tweaked, or reinvented by bureaucrats. A truly free and open press is essential to liberty. Journalism may and will diverge in methodologies, but in one form or another it will survive and thrive, but only do so without apart from more government controls. I most vociferously oppose any further intervention or controls by the FTC or other government agencies.
