From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
The United States of America is not a welfare state, rather it is a Capitalist state and therefore no entity engaged in commerce warrants or deserves a government bailout. Accordingly, I am vehemently opposed to any plan to tax anything to support journalism in America. If the people purporting to be journalists actually knew what being a journalist meant, they would not need government support! Just as the framers of the Constitution knew that government establishment of a religion was wrong, so too did they know that the establishment of a Government run/controlled or financed media is also WRONG. Journalism, to be of value, is required to be free - free from the bonds of obligation to anyone or any thing. Government subsidies, support, etc. create an obligation and the appearance of a conflict of interest affording the financial benefactor unreasonable influence upon the media. Therefore I am ABSOLUTELY opposed to the proposed "Bailout" of the media. It is interesting to note that not all media outlets are experiencing financial difficulties, just those that either were living beyond their means AND OR those that spew the Hate Filled Messages of the secular progressive movement in this country. The solution is simple, since there are more liberal media outlets than their customer base can support, DARWIN's Law of Natural Selection must be permitted to purge the weak. The surviving liberal media outlets will emerge stronger for it. If the media outlets are going broke because of poor business decisions, lack of audience base and reduced revenues, then they like the rest of America need to tighten their belts or fail, not receive a WELFARE CHECK!
