From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
What in the world is the FTC and the US government doing by seeking to bail out certain parts of the media? They have no business intervening. It might be one thing to do something to support our entire financial structure, but focusing on an individual industry is totally out of the question. Are you going to do this for every industry that looks like it is going to fail? And on the backs of us taxpayers? Isn't risk taking what the American way is all about? If some newspapers are about to fail, maybe there is good reason. Maybe they are lousy papers. Would you have tried to save the horse-and-buggy business when cars came on the scene? We are in the electronic age. Maybe the time of paper journalism (or at least some individual outlets) is nearing an end because they aren’t wanted any more. It is not your business to step in and save failing businesses, no matter who or what they are. I strongly oppose this movement on the part of the FTC and any other governmental agency that might be involved.
