From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
I STRONGLY OPPOSE THE PROPOSED "REINVENTION OF JOURNALISM" DOCTRINE RECENTLY RELEASED BY THE FTC. I HAVE HAVE PRACTISED LAW FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS AND NEVER SEEN SUCH A BLATANT ATTEMPMT TO RESTRICT THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH BY A FEDERAL AGENCY. IT IS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD EXPECT TO BE PROPOSED IN THIRD WORLD DICTATORSHIP; HOW CAN THE LEADERS OF A FREE NATION SUGGEST SUCH A SYSTEM? TT DEFIES BELIEF. THE FIRST AMENDMENT OF OUR CONSTITUTION PROTECTS US AGAINST SUCH ATTEMPS TO LIMIT OUR RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH. PERSONS OPPOSED TO A CURRENT GOVERNMENT ARE ENCOURAGED BY ITS PROTECTIVE UMBRELLA TO OPPOSE GOVERMENT ACTIONS, THUS ASSURING US OF A CONTINUING FREE SOCIETY. NOW THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION (THROUGH THE FTC, THE AGENCY CHARGED WITH PROTECTING SUCH RIGHTS) , IS PROPOSING TO CURTAIL THEM AND THUS SUBSTANTIALLY WEAKEN AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF OUR LIBERTIES. THE PROPOSAL MUST NOT BE ADOPTED!!
