From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
While the media may be struggling in this recesion I do not believe as a country that we should be required to pay taxes to insure their survival. Many other new outlets are finding ways to get through this rough time without a bailout from the American people once again. Once these type of taxes are implemented there is no going back. The 47-page bureaucratic plan for the “Reinvention of Journalism” that outlines a series of taxes that would stifle free speech and silence conservatives is not a plan our founding father's intended. Remember our 1st amendment! With these taxes imposed it would be an extensive attempt by the Administration to seize control of the press. I do not support a “journalism division” of AmeriCorps -- forcing taxpayers to pay the Administration to train the next generation of journalists. Let them figure out how to pay for college, etc. on their own. I also do not support a direct Journalism Bailout fund to help pay the salary of every journalist. And this proposed 5% tax on consumer electronics (like the iPad) to pay for this is unexceptable. Also, adding possible taxes on cell phones, television and radio that would all be part of a massive $35 billion “Citizenship Media Fund” is unexceptable and I do not support these taxes that will inevitably stifle our free speech in this nation. Whether it's liberal or conservative speech IT SHOULD ALL BE FREE of this type of "backdoor" assault.
